How to change the payment method's labels in Shopify Checkout

Before 2023, both the Basic and Advanced Shopify plans lacked the capability to customize the payment methods labels, only Shopify Plus merchants could achieve this, but now there are alternative methods to do it.
Whether you want to change the label for one that will be easier to understand by your customers, to add an additional text, or to translate the payment method name for certain countries, here we tell you how to do it.

Do i need to be a Shopify Plus merchant to edit the payment methods?

Not anymore! Before 2023 you could only edit the payment methods by being a Shopify Plus merchant, but now you can achieve this with the Kip: Customize Payment Methods app. With this app you can hide, rename and reorder the payment methods shown in your checkout, and set conditions on them if you need it.

Using the Kip: Customize Payment Methods app to change the payment method label

The Kip: Customize Payment Methods app is made specifically to solve this problem, with it you can configure new labels to show for the payment methods in your checkout. Follow this step by step to achieve this:

Install the app

You can find the app in the Shopify App Store. Click on "Add app" to install.

Create a rename rule

After entering the app, you will be prompted with 3 options: hide, rename and reorder rules. Click on the "Create rename rule" button:

Configure the new payment methods names

In the rule form, enter the payment methods that you which you want the change the label in, and then enter the new label in the input. In this example we renamed Afterpay to "After Pay (pay later):

Note: remember to add the payment method with the name that appears in the Settings > Payments section of your Shopify admin.

Optional: Add conditions

In the condition section, click the "Add new condition" button, then select an option of the list. Here you can select the "Always applies" condition to have this new label in your checkout unconditionally:

After everything is configured, click the "Save" button. To test the rule you can enter your store's checkout and check the new name shown in the payment methods list.
